| Multi-functional windows - or 3rd generation / 3G windows - has integrated functions for ventilation and solar screening and has a very low U-value.
The window consists of an outer and an inner frame with staggered openings to be opened seperately. When passing the void between the frames the air will be prewarmed which causes a reduction of the heat loss.
The staggered openings also give a considerable reduction of outside noise, which allow natural ventilations even in noisy locations.
Solar screening (blinds or screens) can be placed in the gap beetween the frames.
The 4D project has two types of multifunctional windows
- for housing: a manually operated low-tech window
- for offices: a high-tech window with automatic control
The reduction in energy consumption by multi-functional windows is not yet known. The Danish Building Research Institut has a research project on the subject, supported by ELFORSK

Office windows
The windows for the offices have narrow frames at the top and bottom, which can open, both in the inner and in the outer window.
By normal ventilation the upper inner frame and the lower outer frame are open.
More powerful ventilation can be achieved by opening all four frames.
The frames in the middle can be opened for cleaning and mainenance.
The ventilation frames and the solar screening can be operated automatically.

Residence windows
The windows are made of two ordinary windows with respectively top/side-hung frames for the outer frame and and a tilt-and-turn frame for the inner frame.
It is not quite as efficient as the office window, but they are much cheaper and easier to operate.
The function is also better for the use in a residence.
By normal ventilation the outer frame is opened top-hung and the outer frame is opened bottom-hung. The windows can be opened side-hung for more powerful vantilation, cleaning and maintenance.
