The 4D idea

The 4D building site is situated in Ørestad, a new urban district in Copenhagen.

The site has the Ørestad park to the south, and the main road of Ørestad and the Metro to the east. To the north lies the Bella Centre. The western neighbour is a resedential block.

The traditional blocks in Danish city centres usually have commercial space in the lower floors and living space in the higher floors of the buildings.

In the 4D project, the commercial and the living space are placed beside each other, so that the living space becomes more sunny and functions as solar shading for the commercial space.

Commercial space of interest to the public is still situaded in the ground floor. Offices are placed in the higher stories.

There are gardens on the roofs of the one-storey shop buildings in the yard.

An atrium street between the living space and the office space procides acces, natural ventilation, and daylight.

The southwest corner is lowered and the northeast corner is raised, in order to allow more sunlight into the yard.

The living space provides shadow for the glass roof of the atrium as well as the office building.

The building is divided into zones, with service functions and secondary rooms facing the atrium street. Livning rooms and work spaces get direct day-light and view from the facades.

The 4D project is shaped and orientated after the sun.

Offices are mainly in the shadow, apartments in the sun.

The buildings are lower in the south-west corner which provides more sunlight into the courtyard.
